Renowned NYC Dance Company Brings Big-City Energy to Greensboro

I had the privilege to photograph the incredible NYC based dance crew, Ephrat Asherie Dance Company a few weeks back at the UNCG Auditorium.  They performed a very unique show that focused on the history of dance music and the NYC club scene going back to the 1970's to present day time.

Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) is a dance company rooted in African American and Latine street and club dances. Dedicated to exploring the inherent complexities of these dances, EAD investigates the expansive narrative qualities of various vernacular forms including breaking, hip hop, house, and vogue, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression. - ephratasheriedance.com

UNDERSCORED acts as a living archive of five generations of NYC club dancers. The evening-length performance of UNDERSCORED is a multi-generational collaboration with performers ranging in age from 28-80.

Celebrating and investigating their connections to the club scene from the 1970s at seminal parties like the Loft and the Paradise Garage until today, UNDERSCORED features EAD ensemble members and three NYC club legends, Archie Burnett, Brahms "Bravo" LaFortune and Michele Saunders. Audiences join the company in an exhilarating journey through deeply personal histories, rarely seen archival footage, a vast musical landscape including funk, disco and house and of course decades of dancing through the culturally reflective styles of breaking, hip-hop, house, vogue, waacking and hustle. - ephratasheriedance.com

I have been a photographer here in Greensboro since 2004 and have worked closely with UNCG for over a decade capturing many events on campus including all the annual performances for the College of Visual and Performing Arts.

This production was very cool to capture because of the fast pace of the dancers, the background and story that they told and also the set and lighting design that they brought with them!
